Martin concerning the proceedures to be observed during exhumation and official recognition.. It would appear that these questions may have been asked in connection with the exhumation of Fr. Dominic Barberi, C.P., and that this summary was forwarded in turn by Urban Young , C.P., to Gerald O'Boyle, C,P., Vive-Postulator of the cause of Fr. Charles as a guide to the proceedures to be observed in the case of Fr. Charles. This document was enclosed with a letter of 02-09-1937 from Urban to Gerald. under serial no 6636.

Charles of St. Andrew. This addition refers in particular to the invocation of the Servant of God by the sick person. The report was made by the Reverend Father Xavier, C.P., Vice-Postulator, during a conversation with the woman who was cured.

A second letter dated, 17-07-1923, is attached, evidently in reply to a query from Fr. Osmund Donnelly, C.P., Vie-Postulator. She supples the name of her own doctor but cannot remember the name of the doctor in the "Eye-and Ear" Hospital.

1846034 Bl. Charles Houben, C.P., Cures during is life-time: letter from Catherine Lynch, 6 St. Joseph's Alms Houses, Brook Green, London:, reporting the case of a girl, Mary Kate Cope from Co. Mayo or Roscommon, cured of paralysis from the waist down. Fr. Charles said that if she was cured something would befall a member of her family. Two years after her cure, her little sister was shot by accident and killed!

1846034 Bl. Charles Houben: Cures during his life-time: letter from Alice M. Fallon, 56 Jones Road, Glasnevin, Dublin: her daughter cured of a bad squint. She had been advised to take her daughter to see Sir. William Wilde (father of Oscar Wilde) but took her to Fr. Charles instead. Her mother was also cured of rheumatism by Fr. Charles.

1846034 Bl. Charles Houben: Cures during his life-time: letter from Mrs. B Healy, 564 North Circular Road, Dublin: her mother cured of sleeplessness and she herself had growths on her hands cured by Fr. Charles. Her parents, Mr. & Mrs. William Tully, were friends of Fr. Paul Mary Paenham and both attended the first mass celebrated by him in the old farm-house monastery. Mrs. Byrne, who sold the old house to the Passionists, was a cousin of her mother's. Fr. Joseph Smith, C.P., in his life of Fr. Paul Mary mentions that only five people were present at that Mass, including the lay brother who served at the altar, Fr. Matthew Collier from Rathmines and the former owner, Mrs. Byrne. The above information supplies the names of the other two, Mr. and Mrs. Wiliam Tully of 73 Harold's Cross. They also donated the stained glass window of St. Theresa of Avila.

1846034 Blessed Charles Houben - Cause - Apostolic Process:- "Articles For The Apostolic Process Of The Servant Of God Father Charles Of St. Andrew, Passionist". This copy has note on par 103 that name should be Margaret Scally and par 104 that name should be Ed. Fitzgerald

1846034 Blessed Charles Houben, C.P., Writings: McEvoy Family: transcripts of two letters written by Blessed Charles to Mrs, McEvoy, and one by him to her daughter, Pauline. Mrs. McEvoy lived at Tobertynan House, Longwood, Co, Meath and the family was visited by Fr. Charles on several occasions. In gratitude for the gift of a baby daughter - some maintain as a result of intercession by Fr. Charles - they erected a shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes in the woods at their house in 1868. Fr. Charles may have blessed this shrine. For interesting developments re this shrine see correspondence located at 4/4/3/20-25. The daughter, Pauline, named after St. Paul of the Cross, may also have been cured in later life by Blessed Charles. She married the Duke de Stacpoole in 1883. These typescripts were made by Fr. Oliver Kelly, C.P., from the originals, loaned by Major George Stacpoole in 1961, NB. SINCE THE ABOVEN ENTRY WAS MADE, THE ORIGINALS OF THE LETTERS REFERRED TO HAVE COME TO HAND AND ARE ENTERED UNDER SERIAL NUMBERS 8411, 8412 AND 8413. THE TYPED COPIES (REFERRED TO ABOVE) HAVE BEEN ATTACHED TO EACH ORIINAL. THE ABOVE RECORD CONCERNING THE TYPED COPIES HAS, THERFORE, BEEN CANCELLED.

1846034; Houben, Charles: Blessed: Cures obtained through his intercession: partial documents in the case of an infant, Denise Pelly. The main document is a 9 page report, unsigned but marked "Roma 3rd August, 1962". From it we gather that Denise seemed to have improved from her former mental and retarded state, though we have no specific details, The burden of this report is that premature babies - Denise was born prematurely at seven and a half months - often show signs of retardation but many slowly recover. The writer is not at all convinced that there is anything miraculous in this case, and is far from impressed by the child's parents or the doctore under whos care she was. Attached is copy letter from Gerald O'Boyle, C.P. to Dr. Kidney, who was the doctor concerned. He had evidently furnished Gerald with his observations, and Gerald promised to call on him. No further information on this case is extant. The envelope in which the above papers are enclosed is marked by Oliver Kelly, C.P., "Reported Cures Not Passed".

Bl. Charles - Cause:- Informative Process - "Articles Proposed By the Vice-Postulator Rev. Fr. This copy has been heavily anotated in MS with many additions etc., in preperation, it would seem, for the 1936 "Apostolic Process" Articles However, not all of the additions in these 1923 Articles were incorporated in the 1936 Articles (q.v.)
