Catholic News MORLO Catholic Opinion Columbus Day Observed Columbus Day Recognized By Thirty-Four States as a Legal Holiday—Meeting in New York Adversely by Rev. Smith R. Dyan of the Catholic University—Gov. Dr. Dyan in Attendance. Columbus Day has been recognized by 24 states as a legal holiday, through the enactment of legislation which was prompted by the subsequent activities of the Knights of Columbus throughout the country, who urged from a historic standpoint that the university of the birth of the "Discovery of the Americas" should be "given responsibility by the knights of Columbus." The time does not seem far off when the natal day of Christopher Columbus will be a holiday in every state in the Union. Colorado came through with the first proclamation making Columbus Day a legal holiday. A short time later several months after the occasion of the legislature of holidays on the new country ex-Governor Charles E. Hage was cited the bill in 1988 which regarded the holiday. Since the installation of Columbus Day the Knights of Columbus have all was celebrated the event in all of the 24 states, and an added proof of its popularity is evident in the activities of many civic and patriotic organizations. A brilliant program has been arranged in which the artistic contributions of the members of the Guild will be assembled by popular scholars loaned by the country. The guild will be assembled on the event by D. P. Prettin and other birth producers. Assemblyman Peter P. McElligott will be at the knight of Columbus and former superior John Morgan J. O'Donnell, Justice Victor J. Dowling and Rev. Dr. John Talbot Smith will be among the speakers. The work of the Guild this is sixth year, comprehends wider service and professional activity. It has new permanent offices in the Sellyway Theatre and is proving a most attractive meeting place for members of the specialism and the offices of the others, which are available, especially in the interests of the country. The interests of the country interested either directly or indirectly will be current that characteristic of the country. As the entertainment sunday night the details of the season's program will be appoinced, including the late and place of the annual retreat and various social and professional functions in view. RELIGIOUS PROFESSIONS IN BROOKLYN The chapel of St. Francis Monastery, the street of war was seen of a simple but impressive ceremony Sunday afternoon when three young men pronounced their vows for three years. The Right Rev. Mager, Kaupert, V.G., and John J. Dowling were all the professionals who presided at the ceremony and the notices some kindly advise. Extensive information was received from their solemn engagements and telling them about the advantages of an Irish welcome. It has been long before but so has been freedom of our homelands because of the generation of the order which they had embraced.
