Moly Cross College Mosgiel, M.Z., Jan. 6th 1935. 2023-06-09/627 Very Rev. & Dear Father, As you will see from above I am a Seminarian of Holy Cross College, New Zealand where I have been for the last two years stronging Philosophy. Ever since coming to the Seminary, I have received an increasing desire to under tremendous life in the Order of St. Benedict, but in order to test myself I repainted during these years from making this known to my Spiritual Director.

I read all I could on Benedictine life, the Holy Rule and the Order in General, but not only so my desire remain with me but it increases from day to day consequently, I sought the counsel of my Director, Father Gallagher, both who, after I had explained to him my motives, advised me to apply for admission to the Order; Knowing that a personal friend of his, Father Forrest, M.S. C., had come into contact with Benedictine congregations in the last few years, Father Gallagher asked him for information. Father Forrest immediately referred him to St. Columba's Priory. I also had the privilege of meeting Father Forrest and of learning all I could about the congregation about which he gave me a very glowing account which only served to enflame my already kindless desire to conservate myself to God under the rule of St. Benedict. Setting, therefore, on the advice of my Spiritual Director, I now beg of you, Father, to permit me to enter your congregation. I shall be twenty four

years of age next September, a little older, perhaps, than most of my fellow students who are beginning Theology at Messiel; this is probably due to the fact that after leaving St. Patrick's College in Wellington, in 1927, I visited the other side of the world for a year, then returned to Sydney, where I studied in the Faculty of Medicine for three years. Forgive me, Father, for mentioning all these details but it must be bould in mind that our communication between New Zealand and Ireland involves considerable time

I am fortunately under no financial obligation to my Bishop or to the Discesan Tuns; my grandmother, Mrs. Sullivan, of Wellington has promised to pay all expenses involved in my ecclesiastical studies. Would you kindly give me all necessary information and directions concerning heiricity, fees &c. when you reply, so that I shall not have

to worry you with letters seeking further information. I can only pray that my next letter will convey to you my gratifuse that what I feel is my vocation is a manifestation of the Will of God.
