Father Albert, O.F.S.C. By REV. COLUMBA DOWNEY, O.C.C. A S the evening sun was sinking In the golden-painted west, And your exiled term was ending Far away; Did your dying thoughts speed longing To the land you loved the best? Was your dying prayer a wishing For "The Day"? For the day of Erin's triumph When her troubled hour be past, And her struggle, ages old, Be crowned with joy, Did you feel that heaven's blessing Would descend on her at last, Bringing peace and full accord Without alloy? * * * There are eyes in Erin weeping For the Soggarth ever true, In the hour of nation's Calvary Supreme; There are hearts in Ireland breaking In their anguished grief for you, Who in joy and grief were loyal To their dream. To their dream of triumphed Erin, Proud old land across the sea, Never more your eyes her shores Will gaze upon; But your gentle life will strengthen, Through the dark clouds yet to be, Other strong souls, resolute, "To carry on."
