But although I am included in them, I prefer to seeze this occasion, and tell you once more my gratitude toward God and yourself for our long and so dear friendship. Nearly ten years now, this is the 10th Xmas I shall spend in Ireland- and the 5th since I am invalided. Of course, I was taken to hospital only in January 1940, but at Xmas 1939, I was already fairly bad with a heavy bronchitis, and I had to was lie in bed the three days before Xmas, in order to be fit for the Feast ...and for leaving on St. Stephen, for a tour of three retreats, which finished me. How strange to our minds are the ways of Providence. I came here full of ideas,& 1 desire for action; I had started with full heart a new life, wholly consecrated to the welfare of this my land of adoption. And a minute of wind draft, waiting for the Bus on the curb of Morehampton Road, on October 1st deflated all those beautiful plans, and reduced me to the hopeless, helpless, and seemingly useless condition that you know.

But I cannot think it is useless. Although I use sometimes that word, I know that no one is useless, when he leaves himself fully in the hands of God "whose views are not our views, and whose ways are not our ways". I sincerely hope that there is still some good work for me ahead - and therefore I ask you to continue your good, helpful and comforting affection, to help me to do my best according to this God's plan on me. Let us wish, then, and pray that God shows us every day the work of the day, and give us the grace of doing it well and with joy - as we say everyday in the Lord's prayer: "Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven " - where evidently it is done in joy, singing & praising God's wisdom and infinite goodness. I hope you have good news of Maire. I am afraid I shall not be able to write her; but, please, convey to her my kindest wishes, and tell her I do not separate her from the prayers I offer to God for you all. You'll be pleased to hear that yesterday I signed an agreement with Browne and Molan, s for the publication of my book on the Mass. My only objection is that we-thinks (but that can be arranged later on) they put the price too high - 10/6. I'd like a book that every clerical student and nun could buy. But all of that is the future, and in the hands of God - and He made the present quite hopeful. ever your friend
