Dear Father de Coninck, His Lordship, Bishop Myers, has passed to me your enquiry as to litterae testimoniales for Mr. Ivor Harte Barry. You will appreciate that, considering the numbers of places in which he has served, it is impossible to gather direct evidence either from the Ordinaries of those places or from Chaplains who may have known him. The procedure adopted in similar cases is for the ex-serviceman himself to write to the Records of his particular branch of the Army and ask for his "record of service" together with a statement that he is shown as a single man on attestation and discharge. This will be given only to the person himself concerned. On this being received by me from the aspirant I would be prepared to give the necessary testimonial letters - in quantum possum. It does not seem to me a very satisfactory method and some Superiors and Ordinaries appear to have found an alternative in the provisions of Canons 544 & 545 by accepting a testamentary deposition, but I am quite prepared to act as I have done in the past on the receipt of Mr. Barry's record of service.
