THE DEPARTURE OF VERY REV. DR. THOMAS, O.S.F.C. A correspondent writes:—The above distinguished Capuchin sailed by the s.s. Celtic for America on Sunday, accompanied by the Very Rev. Father Berchmans Cantillon, O.S.F.C. It will be a surprise to the citizens of Cork to learn of Dr. Thomas' departure for America, because all believed that he would be in our midst for some years to come, considering the fact that he only returned from missionary work in U.S.A. last July. Cork's loss is America's gain, for our beloved citizen has been sent by his superiors to make a new foundation of the Capuchin Order in San Francisco. He leaves to the regret of all sections of the citizens, and accompanied by their unanimous good wishes. Very few knew of Dr. Thomas' departure, but he was seen off by some influential citizens who heard of the date of his leaving. The White Star Line Company did everything to show honour to their distinguished passenger, and Captain English, Mr. W. H. O'Reilly, and Mr. J. Murray showed the company's appreciation of having such an honoured guest by the graceful manner in which they facilitated his joining the s.s. Celtic. He was seen off by his Provincial Superior, the Very Rev. Dr. Sylvester; Very Rev. Fr. Laurence, who succeeds him as Guardian of Cork; Very Rev. Dr. Edwin, Fathers Fiacre and Kevin, Superior of St. Bonaventure's. The Presentation Order was represented by Rev. Brothers Aquin and Gilbert. Amongst the many friends to see Dr. Thomas and Father Berchmans off were—Mr. M. Egan, T.D.; Dr. Denis Murphy, Dr. J. J. O'Connor, Capt. Collins, H.C.; and Mr. T. Daly. Mr. W. J. Gernon, Athcarne Castle, who is a dear friend of Dr. Thomas', accompanied them on the s.s. Celtic to U.S.A. After wishing Dr. Thomas and Father Berchmans good luck and a pleasant voyage, their many friends bade them farewell as the s.s. Celtic sailed gracefully out the harbour, amidst the sounding of sirens and waving of handkerchiefs. 2.2.25
