Compton Ave. OTHERS TO BE ERECTED LATER Franciscan Fathers Hope to Have New Grade School Ready in 6 Months The building permit for the new St. Lawrence school at the corner of N. Compton avenue and Palm drive, was taken out last week, and the contractors, Ralf E. Homann Co. have already the ground graded and the concrete foundations begun. This will be an eight grade school and in the course of five or six months it is expected to be complete and furnished. This is the commencement of a group of buildings to be erected by the Franciscan Capuchin Fathers, who are permanently established in Watts. Without institutions of education similar to the fine schools now in progress, a general care for the children, there is no hope of reaching the Catholic population of a parish or a city. The Capuchin Fathers have realized the crying need of such an educational establishment in Watts, and hence they have been untiring in their efforts, since their advent to Los Angeles, to supply this need. Begun about the great Solemnity of their founder, St. Francis, Oct. 4th, the Capuchins will no doubt receive their Father's special blessing on their new foundations. Similar homes of learning the Irish Capuchins conduct in Ireland, the province to which the Fathers in Watts and in many other cities in the States belong. Like the Irish Friars of old, these Fathers, with their motto "Peregrinari pro Xhristo," came to this vast continent, leaving their country, their kindred, and their Father's house—called like Abraham of old to the land which the Lord his God would point out to him. Today the Irish Friars and priests are found like those Irish Monks of old, who taught and preached the truths of the Gospel, and shed their blood in defense thereof, to go forth to found schools, churches and monasteries, which become centers of civilization and nurseries of sacred science, brought with their faith and gospel, for the the schools and monasteries at home. In order to meet the heavy outlay of approximately $40,000, the cost of the new school, whist parties and other socials have been inaugurated (Continued on page two)
