SAINT LAWRENCE OF BRINDISI, O.F.M. CAP. 1559-1619 Feast day, July 23 At 16 Lawrence of Brindisi entered the Capuchin Order where he distinguished himself by his zeal for souls and fervor at prayer. In 1602 he was elected general of the Order. Like his divine Master he went about doing good and relieving every form of human suffering. The Jews of Rome received special consideration, and all of them respected him for his knowledge and holiness. Perhaps the saint's most striking service to God was his share in organizing the Catholic League which helped to preserve Catholicism at the time of the Reformation. He preached throughout Europe and became one of the pioneers of the Capuchin Order in Germany. Appointed chaplain-general of the Christian forces fighting against the Turks, Lawrence himself with only a cross in his hand rode at the head of the army and led it to a miraculous victory. His thoughts were always on God. So devoted was he to the Blessed Sacrament that he almost always fell into ecstasy while reading Mass. He cherished the most filial affection for the Blessed Virgin in whose name he worked many miracles. He died at Lisbon during one of his diplomatic missions. Canonized in 1881.
