County Louth Property Defence Association. A GENERAL MEETING of the Landlords and Agents of the County Louth was held in Dundalk, on Thursday, 20th October, 1881. Present:—Viscount Massereene, Lord Clermont, Lord Bellew, Sir J. Robinson, Colonel Fortescue, J. Murphy, G. Knaggs, F. Chester, J. E. Bigger, J. R. Garstin, F. Filgate, C. Filgate, W. D. Filgate, L. Lee-Norman, H. Brush, C. Woodhouse, A. Henry, T. Macartney-Filgate, D. Browne, W. Browne, W. Dolling, A. Trench, R. Smith, T. J. Thomson, B. R. Balfour, J. F. Foster, Vere Foster, T. M. Richardson, H. S. Smith, W. Robson, E. P. Stewart, R. T. Montgomery, A. Macan, W. Butler, G. Pentland, R. Quin, E. Tipping, A. H. Wynne, Rev. R. Scott, C. MacMahon, A. Newcomen, J. Wright, E. Hamilton, and C. E. Dobbs, Esquires. On the motion of LORD CLERMONT, seconded by LORD BELLEW, VISCOUNT MASSEREENE TOOK THE CHAIR. On the motion of COLONEL FORTESCUE, seconded by Mr. WYNNE, Mr. MACARTNEY-FILGATE was appointed Secretary to the Meeting. A number of letters of apology from gentlemen who were unable to attend, but who expressed sympathy with the objects of the Meeting, were read. The following Resolutions were then proposed and seconded by the gentlemen indicated, and in every case were carried unanimously:— 1. Proposed by Mr. LEE-NORMAN, and seconded by Mr. MURPHY:— “That we hold the Government responsible for the enforcement of the laws and the preservation of the public peace, and view with satisfaction the measures which are now being taken to re-establish that order which we have always endeavoured to maintain, and which we now trust every loyal person will assist in restoring.” 2. Proposed by LORD BELLEW, and seconded by Mr. QUIN:— “That since the Land Act of 1881 is now the law of the country, we accept it loyally, and are prepared to carry out its provisions in a spirit of friendliness towards our tenants.” 3. Proposed by COLONEL FORTESCUE, and seconded by LORD CLERMONT:— “That we approve of the adoption of the following Resolution passed at a General Meeting of the Property Defence Association, on August 31st last:— “That we, the undersigned, promise to pay one half per cent. on the Poor Law Valuation of our Properties, for the next three years, to the Property Defence Association, or to one of the organizations now working for the preservation and defence of Property in Ireland.” 4. Proposed by COLONEL FORTESCUE, and seconded by Mr. FITZHERBERT FILGATE:— “That a branch of the Property Defence Association be established in the County Louth, for the purpose of collecting subscriptions, and of rendering assistance and information to the parent Society, in the spirit of the Resolution passed at the General Meeting of the above Association on August 31st.” 5. Proposed by Mr. TRENCH, and seconded by Mr. PENTLAND:— “That a working Local Committee be now appointed, to consist of members of the County Branch of the above named Association, one of them to act as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer.” 6.
