The purpose of the present appeal is to secure a worthy memorial to the Brothers Pearse. The Hermitage, Rathfarnham, the scene of the labours of their last years, is still in the hands of Mrs. Pearse, and may be secured to the Nation if prompt steps are taken to raise the purchase money necessary. Since September, 1916, the work of St. Enda's has been carried on in its first home, Cullenswood House, Rathmines. Since March, 1917, the St. Enda's Purchase Committee, under the patronage of George Noble Count Plunkett, has been working to raise the funds required to transfer Sgoil Eanna again to the healthiest, most beautiful, and most romantic spot in South Co. Dublin—the Hermitage. Owing to the extraordinary circumstances of the time, no effective appeal could then be made, and the few hundred pounds collected have been spent in paying the rent of the Hermitage, so as to preserve the right of purchase. This Committee has now been merged in the present movement, and will work in co-operation with the Save St. Enda's Committee in America, but trusts the generosity of the Irish people at home will be the largest factor in yet saving St. Enda's for the Irish Nation. The option of purchasing the Hermitage is passing away, and action must be taken at once. That is our apology, if apology indeed be needed, for making the present appeal, which, owing to the urgency of the National Aid and other emergency matters, we have hesitated to make. St. Enda's was so much the expression of P. H. Pearse's personality that its importance as the most practicable and soundest attempt to reform Irish education has been disregarded.
