Cape Flats 1929 - 1979. This year, Feb.4th. 1979, marks the Golden Jubilee of the arrival of the Irish Capuchins in Capetown. Celebrations were held in each of our houses with the climax in Parow on the 4th of October. On that day about sixty clergy including the Cardinal and two bishops concelebrated mass. During the mass (Bishop Breen) and at the lunch afterwards (the Cardinal) Many tributes were paid to the order and to our splendid work in the Cape Flats. Landmarks in the Mission to South Africa 1927 Invitation dated May 12th from Dr. O'Riley to establish an Irish Capuchin Foundation in the Cape Province South Africa.1928 Irish Provincial Chapter accepted the invitation.1929 Fathers Canice and Edward go to Capetown to survey the possibilities. Arrived Feb.4th. In October, Frs. Casimir, Alban and Declan leave Ireland for Capetown - Parow and Athlone were eventually assigned to them. Arrived Oct. 20th. Pioneers of Irish Work there.1930 On April 9th, Fr. Oliver left Cork for the Cape. Same year, Capuchins were invited to work in the western part of the Broken Hill Prefecture, Northern Rhodesia - now western Zambia. Invitation accepted - the particular area was called Barotseland and had no missionaries.

1936 Barotseland was declared an independent mission on March 10th. and then later (May) raised to the status of a Prefecture - the PREFECTURE of VICTORIA FALLS. Fr. Killian, Prefect Apostolic. 1950 Prefecture made a VICARIATE, with Fr. Phelim as Vicar Apostolic and first Bishop. 1968 Mission in the Cape Flats, Capetown became independent under its own Regular Superior - Fr. Ronald O.F.M.
