2023-10-06/800 ARCHBISHOP'S HOUSE. 10th September, 1944. Very Rev. and dear Fr. Prior, I am asked by His Grace the Archbishop to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of your letter of 8th inst. concerning Brian Callinan. His Grace requests me to repeat his desire that the toleration extended by the Archbishop in respect of this pupil should as far as possible remain secret: how that secrecy is to be maintained is, the Archbishop feels, altogether a matter for the discretion of the College Authorities. In explaining the case wherever it may become necessary, the terms used may not, under any circumstances, include the phrase "c'est selon le desir de sa Grace que nous preparons Brian aux examens de Trinity". His Grace has not in any sense desired this boy to enter Trinity. His Grace has, for grave reasons, with very deep reluctance, tolerated the presence of the boy in Trinity College, provided that very definite safeguards are taken. The Archbishop bids me thank you for the courtesy of your sollicitude and asks me to express his very great satisfaction that the Rector of your College has avowed his fidelity to the law of the Church concerning attendance at Trinity College.
