In writing to the Universe, I felt that I could speak for many, including many good Englishmen and I was glad to have your assurance — not the only one that came. I could write much to show that Royce Carent was remarkably sare and well-balanced. He foresaw the war clearly years before it began and he had calculated that German organisation and efficiency would win, as indeed it might have done but for a main error in German war policy. The moment was broke out, he prepared to go to Germany. I had no opportunity of consulting with him, for he was then in America. Had I had an opportunity I should have said to him what I said all along to my considers here — no country in this war will think of helping you, but if you put it in their power they will try to use you as they would use so much ammunition. The complete liberation and unity of Ireland can only be expected with patience. One thing that will help towards it is the intellectual collapses of the Reformed churches. Another will be Catholic sincerity and charity. Will you ask God to bless the Eucharistic Congress and the St Patrick Centenary of 1932? I am not writing books at all on Irish history, but have plenty of PHONE BLACKROCK 57. I also hope to collaborate with my former prepil, Father John Ryan S. J., in a new life of St Patrick for general reading.
