- General note
- James Thomas Knowles (1831-1908) was an architect and later a journalist and editor. In 1869 he founded the Metaphysical Society, a debating society of which Gladstone was a charter member. The aim of the Metaphysical Society was to encourage a rapprochement between religion and science by inviting public representatives of faith and no faith to meet and exchange ideas. Gladstone published an article on the supposed links between Dante and Oxford in a monthly review magazine titled ‘The Nineteenth century’ in June 1892. Dear Mr Knowles A particular circumstance recently had me to consider a matter which though entirely irrolated is I think of real literary interest, the question whether Dante studied at or prefer - this question has been a little touched by others. Deane Pleumptre did good survie in it. I have briefly to work to the bottom of it is a multitude of memory particular. Put it in type if you think with which; and if you do it such a proof to me, (to Carlton Gardner if on or after many q); and another to Mr. J. Morley G & Elm Park Gardner S. W. Yours sincerely Wyladton John Will Kilburn Ap 30. 92
