St. Raphael's Cathedral Dubuque, Iowa October Eighteenth 1 9 1 8 Reverend and dear Father:- I really owe you an apology for not having acknowledged the message of congratulation which you were kind enough to send me on the occasion of the announcement of my appointment to the See of Baker City, Oregon. Now that the Holy See has granted my petition for the recall of that appointment, I feel that the time is opportune for acknowledging the cordial good wishes that were extended to me. I wish, therefore, to thank you just as sincerely and just as fervently for your cordial well-wishes as I would have done had I accepted the appointment.
