My dear Father Provincial: I want to apologise for my Cable asking your approval for the purchase of property for a Seraphic School. It seemed to be the only way, The matter came up somewhat suddenly. We had to make up our minds quickly. I have been urged for long by the members of the Order, and our friends among the Secular Clergy to do what I could for ourselves while Archbishop Cantwell is with us. This seemed to be the best prospect. There were others bidding for the place. I asked Father Benno for permission. He got in touch with the Apostolic Delegate and wired me to go ahead. Later he sent me a letter from the Delegate authorising me to borrow $20,000.00 to make the purchase. On receipt of his wire I wired you for approval. This I felt was the proper procedure. I am most grateful for your prompt reply. May I say that I expected you to reply just the way you did. For I know your sympathetic understanding of the whole problem, and your desire to help in every way possible. I have just seen Archbishop Cantwell. He told me to go ahead, and write him regarding a foundation when we got the place. He also promised to consider deeding us the Old Mission if we would develop it. The only difficulty now concerns the Zoning regulation. I am afraid we are going to have Saint Francis of Assisi 1541 GOLDEN GATE AVENUE LOS ANGELES 26, CALIF. PHONE OLYMPIA 1305 a battle on our hands over it. But we will do our best. I have sent you two copies of the report of the Visitation. I hope they reached you alright.
