St. Anthony's Mission Mendocino, California, U. S. A. Aug. 4, 1921 The Very Rev. Father Edwin, Provincial Very Rev and dear Father In reference to the money in dispute. In January 1920 I sent to the Provincial of the English Province the sum of $25900-00. According to the exchange at that time about $7000-0-0. There remained the value of $1925-00 which had been invested for the benefit of the Missions and is still invested. The Provincial and Definition of England demand that this money also be sent to England. I appealed to them to leave it here, as the Missions need it. They refused. I then appealed to Most Rev Fr. General. You know his answer. In my humble opinion the Missions have some claim on the money raised here to build necessary Chapels and Schools. Besides the investments can not be sold at present without serious loss. There is a serious depreciation just now in all investments. All that I have received in dividends since Jan. 1920 is $67-70. And since Jan 1920 I had find $600-00 to send Fr. Michael and Father Raymond home. We need a School here, at Fort Bragg, Ukiah; we need a Chapel at Caspar, where Mass is said in a Movie Hall; we need a Chapel at Albion; not to speak of many other needs of the Missions.
