ST. MARY OF ANGELS, CHURCH STREET, DUBLIN. Monday, October 22nd 1923. My dear Father Joseph, Thanks for your letter and Article on St. Inez of the 29th September. Your good Bishop called with his companion on the 7th inst. just as I was about to start for Dover with the three students to put them on their way to Rome. He spoke of St. Inez as coming to us next year. I will ask him for a letter requesting us to take it over, when I see him here again next month. He is very anxious you should have good preachers and prudent Fathers at Watts, thoroughly American and interested in their work for the growth of the Church, etc. He spoke well, of your work, and of what he heard of Thomas and the work in San Francisco, but evidently some of your men have not avoided remarks, which wound the susceptibilities of the clergy there Our English Fathers fell into the same mistake regarding the Fathers of the Calvary Province in the East, with the result that Fr. General could not attach them to the House in New York for their engagements in the coming year. Hence I have been requested to allow them to be attached to our Hospice at Abbotstown instead. We thought it best to consent, and I arranged with the Provincial of England that the Fathers who go are to report at Abbotstown, and undertake no work in the places where our Fathers are, or where the Superior thinks they should not go. That will give an opportunity of avoiding friction as far as we can do so, while giving the Fathers the opportunity of fulfilling their Missionary engagements in Boston and New York. The matter has been arranged in that way with our Superiors in Rome, and the Fathers sail on the 3rd November, with Obedience from Fr. General. I am writing to that effect to Fr. Brendan. I am glad to learn that your Bazaar was such a great success. I will enquire into the Foundation Documents regarding Bend, Hermisten, Roesburg and Lincoln, but I think they are all right. Of course we have no documents for the Mission in Mendocino, and your Report of Visitation mentions none found there. I hope yourself and all our Brethren are well and happy under your paternal care.
