ST. MARY OF ANGELS, CHURCH STREET, DUBLIN. Monday, October 22nd 1923. Dear Father Brandan. By arrangement with the Provincial of our English Province and our Superiors in Rome, some Fathers from that Province with Fr. Nicholas, Definitor as their Superior, are sailing on the 3rd Nov. prox. for New York, with an Obedience from Most Rev. Fr. General, which they will present to you at Abbotstown. They are due to fulfil engagements taken on at in Boston and New York for next month and after, etc. I have arranged with Fr. Cuthbert their Provincial, that they are not to take on any Missions in your district, in Pennsylvania or wherever you have reason to reserve for your own labours in the East, so that no friction may arise while they remain in the States. Their Obedience to your House will give you an opportunity of treating them fraternally, and of seeing that their work does not interfere in any way with your own. They were accredited formerly to 31st Street New York, but seemingly some impudent remarks probably made thoughtlessly hurt the feelings of the Brotheren there, and they naturally did not want to accomodate them further. That, and other remarks made by American Prelates, should be a warning especially to our young Fathers to take special care of their language and criticisms of the clergy, regular and secular. America is big enough and broad enough for the energy and zeal of all who wish to labour there for the Church and souls, yet small things sometimes hinder or impede the progress of missionary work. You are experienced enough to understand all that, but kindly give a word of warning to the young Fathers before they embark on missionary work. "Prevention is always better than cure".
