Letter from Fr. Luke Sheehan to Fr. Joseph Fenelon

Letter from Fr. Luke Sheehan OFM Cap. to Fr. Joseph Fenelon OFM Cap. regarding a serious accident involving Fr. Leo Sheehan OFM Cap. and the subsequent staffing crisis in the Oregon mission. Father Leo suffered a ‘nasty break’ of the shoulder, a ‘scalp wound’, and a ‘slight fracture of the skull’. While there was initial fear of brain injury, that has been ruled out. However, a broken collarbone will keep him hospitalized for at least two months, and he likely won't return to work for six months

However, a broken collarbone will keep him hospitalized for at least two months, and he likely won't return to work for six months. He also mentions there is a C.C.C. Camp in Bend, and they are building a second one in Gilchrist. He emphasizes the urgent need for a ‘good reliable Priest’ to attend to these camps and the growing congregation.

Box 987 Rend. one 3-27. 35 Dear Joseph It Les met with a very serious accident a week ago which will keep him in Hospital for two months and perhaps long. It will be at least six months before he will be able to resume brook even if then. He was on his way to Redmond for the Senten Devotion. Cauding a curse he for some reason lost control of the car and landed in a pile of rocks. He had a very bad scalp around and a slight fracture of the skull. So far there is not the superior trace that the brain injured. But he has a broken ventebra which lays him on his back in some head of from for eight weeks and then some. Next week the Doctor will take some more in Ray Pictures. He is not suffering much peer except when he is moved about. But you know it is sufferent peer to be in the one position all the time. In the meantime I am all alone and of course I cannot take change of Bend and the mission. First before the accident happened the Bishop asked for a mon to take change of Hood River so I allowed Laberin to go and very likely he will have to remain there a few months. Of course he is in Bend a good deal but not at the time. We want him - sundays. However we have one B.B.B. Comp to look after and they are building a second one in our district to be completed around May. We will have to attend that also. Now then can your Reverence send me a good reliable Present. I consider Les's existence in Bend as a thing to be forgotten. I fear it will be long before he can return in or away again. The Present that comes here should be able to drive on auto with safety. 3 It would help considerably if we had a Preacher here. I understand that we have three House in Oregon and no Preacher of distinction. If that is so it is sad. Why not send to Sylvan. The change will do him good and I think he likes the west at least he used to take the west. On thing the matter is anger and spray your Reverence to help us out as soon as possible. Riddy were your decision so that Les arrange accordingly with best wishes. Cap The only exploration we can competent for the accident is that Les stapped on the Gas instead of the Brake. It happened so quickly that as far he cannot give the slightest account of it. Fortunately it was still light and he was only three miles from Bend. I
