- Letter from Fr. Luke Sheehan OFM Cap., Bend, Oregon, to Fr. He mentions a plan to visit ‘Warm Springs’ soon but fears the timing is ‘not a very opportune moment’. He notes that the Bishop recently sent another priest to visit there, likely to convince the ‘Indians’ (residents of the Warm Springs Reservation) that a resident priest is a necessity. He describes this as a ‘selection to be made’ that is likely to ‘throw the baptismal water on the first head he would meet’. He emphasizes the need for a ‘third point’ between the two missions.

Bend Brook Co. Oregon U. S. A. 11-2-12 My Dear To Angelus I received your kind letter last night & I was very glad to learn that the Defension is sending out a present to help to Casemi & myself. If possible I shall have an interview with the Bishop, this week and acquainting him with the intentions of the Superiors. He will not build a Church or Residence before informing me & I am almost certain that he will not be able to secure sufficient money to do so. On that point you may very easily do some possible but I fear that just now is not a very deporture moment. It is only a few weeks since the Bishop sent to heart to visit there. I had just informed him of my intention of going to Lower Springs but desperted that fact he sent another priest. His object there no doubt was to try & force the Paramount into the belief that a Resident Priest would be a necessity there. The fact appears to me all the more likely from the selection be made. The heart is a man likely to throw the Doptersal water or the first heart he would meet. As shall find here for a third priest between the two missions. I would be very thankful if you could let me know well ahead the father who is coming out. I am engaged to have my magic lontero slide brought out they would be a help in getting me some money out here. Lunching your every blessing Sincerely yours Jake
