Provincial: I came on here today to make the Visitation, as I wont have much time after the Missions in New York. I was present at the Installation Ceremony of Archbishop Murray in St. Paul last week, and it was a wonderful affair. Thirty eight Bishops attended, and over 600 priests. The celebrations lasted the week, and before I left St. Paul yesterday, I called on his Grace, and had an interview with him. As I represented Bishop Cantwell at the doings, I availed of the opportunity of presenting Bishop's compliments, and at the same time to get a close up view of his Grace. He was very nice, asked me about the phases where we were located, and if we were not in St. Paul, I said I didn't intend any special business on this occasion, but he replied it was all right, and then I informed him, of the letter the late Archbishop gave me, requesting the Father Provincial to apply for a Residence in St. Paul. He asked me then, did the letter of application arrive, and I had to tell him, that owing to the feeble health of the late Archbishop, it was let slip. So I said no more, and he was very gracious, and asked me to dine with him on the occasion of my next visit. Now it is up to you and the Definitory to make the next move. You know Fr. Sylvester told me, he always heard of the late Archbishop's letter, inviting us to the Archdiocese, and that he would be able to get it through if he had known of it. The letter is at home in the Archives, and if you consider it advisable to open up this matter, the sooner it is done the better. The Archbishop is a very small man in stature, but an eight Cylinder in energy, intellect and self-possession. He made his studies in Louvain about thirty years ago. Perhaps you or Sylvester remember him. The priests and people are delighted with him. I am going to New York for the Lent, three weeks in St. Agnes' parish, I am E. 43rd. St. and then in St. John's, Msgr Carroll's Parish. Fr. Shanley's will always find me. 320 W. 53rd. St. I am enclosing $50.00, for Masses for the S. African Fathers. Fr. Alban wrote me for some.
