Biocese of Monterey-Fresno 2820 Mariposa Street Fresno, California April 2nd, 1935. Rev. Thomas Dowling, O. M. C. Burlingame, Calif. Dear Fr. Thomas: I am really delighted that you have so kindly decided to preach the annual retreat for my good priests. I am sure they will be greatly benefitted by your own solid devotion and personal experiences. I am glad you enjoyed the notes on dear Theresa. The memory of her and possibly her prayers have greatly stimulated me in the work for the salvation of souls. God grant that before I die I be allowed to save many as the best expiation of all my sins. I am expected to have a pontifical high-mass at Santa Clara University next Tuesday at 10 o'clock. If I knew that you also would be there I would bring with me a souvenir of your first visit here from Fr. Culleton and Miss Streeter. Since the weather has grown warmer my pets have grown also more full of mischief and especially those of the finny tribe. It is perfectly marvelous what God has put into the heads of those little animals. Even they, in God's own image, seem to cave craw attention love and consideration. How much more right than have human beings to seek those things in us. I fear that I am rambling and I note that this epistle has already grown longer than I had expected, so I will come to a close.
