66, Petterside Street Carlisle Jan. 14th 1949. Dear Fr. Seanan, Above address is given for fear of any confusion, though actually I'm on holidays at home until Mon day. Your letter and chague have just been forwarded from Carlisle. For both very many thanks. I'm glad you like the paper. Why did I take myself over there? What's a question I answered very adequately in September — answered myself, I mean. Now the reasons are somewhat obscured by the blunting effects of teaching English to the English, for three months. But some of the reasons were, a militant boredon with the Civil Service, inability to get what I slightly described (to my father) as a suitable job in Dublin, curiosity about the English Question, and midsummer madness. Teaching is not dull like the C. S., but it's an impossible job for a writer. About two thirds of one's free time is misnamed. The result has been a maddening slowing up of the novel I am working on, and it is only during these holidays that it has reached the reasonable proportions of 58,000 words.
