This was the official publication of the Irish International Exhibition held in Dublin in 1907. The exhibition was an elaborate enterprise designed to show off the best of Irish industry and crafts, and to attract visitors from overseas to sample its numerous entertainments. It opened on 4 May 1907 on a site between Ballsbridge and Donnybrook in Dublin. The land used for the exhibition later became Herbert Park. Although the main purpose of the exhibition was to highlight Irish industrial endeavour, there were also displays of motor cars, electric and gas lighting and machinery, and an exhibit depicting life in British Somaliland, the ‘Somali village’, which was the exhibition’s most popular attraction. It is estimated that the exhibition received nearly three million visitors during its six-month run. Despite this, the event was deemed to be a commercial failure, racking up what was the for the time a colossal loss of about £100,000.
