General note
Erskine Nicol (1825-1904), a Scottish artist, first visited Ireland in 1845 beginning a long-lasting relationship with the country. He lived in Dublin between 1845 and 1850 and subsequently visited every summer. Arriving in the country at the height of the famine, he witnessed at first-hand the devastating effects of the disaster particularly along the western seaboard. He readily identified with the oppression of rural people and much of his work portrays the injustices inflicted upon the Irish population at this time. As a recorder of Irish life his work has become historically important because there were few artists working in Ireland at that time, a country devastated initially by the famine and later by land agitation, mass evictions and emigration. His work is well-known for its lively colours and scenes taken from everyday life, frequently interspersed with a touch of humour.
