May 12th, 1945. 2023-06-13/650 Very Reverend and dear Father Prior, I am indeed grateful to you for your letter and for the kindness expressed therein. The matter referred to is one which long since has passed out of my mind. It is not possible for me to answer the questions categorically. Nevertheless, I shall confine myself to the questions specifically asked: answering as briefly as possible, whilst refraining from lengthy explanations, especially of the circumstances which led up to the interview. 1o "Is it true that a few hours (1 or 2 days) before Miss Judith was to be married, you called her to interview with you and remonstrated with her upon her marrying him." With three important qualifications the answer is - "Yes". Firstly, there was nothing peremptory about the invitation: it had been previously arranged. Secondly, it could scarcely be termed remonstration. I was not concerned with trying to prevent this marriage or of trying to dissuade Miss Judith from entering it. Thirdly, there was no question whatever of trying to dissuade her from marrying the particular gentleman in question. 2o "If so did you think that you had a right to deal with her in that way? - What right?" Again subject to qualification, the answer is "No!" At the time I did not consider my position from the point of view of right, strictly so called. The only justification for my interest in the matter was that it was invited both by Mrs. Murray and her daughter. 3o "On what purpose did you act, since all was already decided and settled at the time?" My purpose, motivated purely by charity and invited by the persons mentioned, was to help Miss Judith, who,

even at that time, expressed herself to be in a state of perplexity, come to a decision which would cause her no regret later in life. I may be permitted to add, Father Prior, that the interest taken in the affair by me was not questioned by either Mrs. Murray or her daughter: on the contrary it was invited. Neither was there any objection raised to my attitude in the affair either by Miss Judith or her mother, then or on the subsequent occasions upon which I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Murray. 2. X I have taken it for granted, Father Prior, that the Propriety of my action is in no way called in question. 1. X Should my answers require further elucidation or explanation I shall be only too pleased to supplement them in any way that may be desired.
