DEAR SIR, Notwithstanding the action of the Government with respect to the Land League, it is but too apparent that in many instances the advice given by the League in its recent manifesto will be carried out, and that in various parts of the country there will be a general refusal to pay any rent. Under these circumstances, the same aid which has hitherto been given by this Committee will continue to be extended—so far as the means at its disposal admit—to persons requiring same to assert their legal rights, or to protect themselves from organized intimidation or persecution. Although the Committee is connected with the Orange Society, its aid has been and will continue to be given cheerfully to all persons irrespective of creed or political views; and it must be admitted that the Society, from its organization and the influence it possesses amongst the agricultural and operative classes in Ulster, renders it most suitable for contending with such a body as the Land League. During the past few months upwards of 1,000 writs for the recovery of land or rent have been served in different parts of Ireland by persons in the employment of the Committee, sent down from Dublin specially for that purpose, while agents of the Committee have attended Sheriffs' sales of cattle or farms in nearly 700 different cases. The Committee have had 300 labourers engaged in cutting and saving hay and other crops, in 19 different counties in Ireland; and many persons would have lost their entire crops but for the action of the Committee. These labourers have been engaged in the counties of Meath, Cork, Louth, Tipperary, Sligo, Longford, King's County, Queen's County, Wexford, Waterford, Wicklow, Kilkenny, Clare, Limerick, Leitrim, Mayo, Monaghan, Kildare, and Dublin; while in several counties in Ulster the crops of "Boycotted" persons were saved by the action of local branches of the Orange Society. It is calculated that, through the direct action of this Committee, upwards of £60,000 has been secured for landed Properties and others who have been suffering persecution at the hands of the Association of League. The Committee are aware that at the recent meeting of the Property Defence Association—which is doing a good work—a resolution was passed which has since been adopted at meetings of branches of that Association pledging those present to subscribe a fixed amount out of their incomes, but leaving it optional with the subscribers to send their donations to one or more of the bodies which have been working in support of law and order in Ireland. This Committee, relying on the support which it has hitherto received from the general public of all classes, has not considered it advisable to suggest to its subscribers or those whom it has aided that they should contribute any fixed sum; but they would wish that anyone acting on the resolution referred to, and sending a contribution to the fu…
