FINANCIAL STATEMENT --OF-- St. Francis of Assisi Church Sunset Blvd. and Maltman LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 1931 ... In Charge ... CAPUCHIN FRANCISCAN FATHERS SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI CHURCH LOS ANGELES - CALIFORNIA My Dear People: In accord with the Law of the Church as expressed by the Third Council of Baltimore, of reading every year at High Mass on a Sunday of the month of January, a statement of the financial condition of the parish, it is my pleasure, not only to submit said statement, but in addition a correct detailed account of all individual contributions toward the support of Religion in the parish, for the personal satisfaction and perusal at leisure of each one. This complete statement of the past year's receipts, expenses and indebtedness of our parish, I present gratis to you. The general depression of the year just closed has had its effects on the upkeep of the Church; yet, on the whole, the results are satisfactory, and I gratefully acknowledge the sacrifices made by our people in meeting the demands of their Church. These were made, doubtless, from a spirit of Faith, and an appreciation of what has been done in the material development and beautifying of our parish Church. It is a source of genuine pleasure to a Pastor, to work unceasingly for people who endeavor to loyally cooperate in accord with their means, and this in the main you have done in making the past year a financial success. In reading through this report, the good church member will be gratified at his or her complying with duty and conscience, as specified under the different headings, and the indifferent member of Mother Church, should feel a qualm of conscience, when the returns of such for the year are set forth. If parishioners were assessed by the Church, as they are by the State, the Pastor would receive a full share for parish purposes, and more time for devotion to things spiritual. The State, County and City levies, you must pay, the Church does not demand those drastic measures. She relies on the faith of the "cheerful giver." Hence I strongly urge on every young man and young woman, who is a wage-earner, the duty and propriety of using the Sunday envelope. If every parishioner did his or her duty, in this respect, the disagreeable thing both to pastor and people of the "money talk" during the year would be unnecessary. No one will work for nothing except the pastor who cannot get a salary. Most gratifying have been the activities of our parish societies and most edifying and numerous have been the Easter and Christmas Communions. In thanksgiving to God for all His blessings during 1930, and in the hope that the Financial Statement herewith submitted, may be a further stimulus for greater cooperation and loyalty to Church during this year is the sincere wish of Yours devotedly in Christ and St. Francis, Father Joseph Fenelon, O.M.
