FOUNDATION OF IRISH CAPUCHINS IN ROSEBURG, OREGON. The history of the foundation of the House of the Irish Capuchin Franciscans in Roseburg, Oregon, is contained in the documents preserved in our Provincial Archives, Dublin. Reference is made in this account to the principal documents and letters dealing with Roseburg. I have 6numered them according to their chronological order, and I have added copies of the principal items mentioned below. I. July 19th 1911. The official invitation from Archbishop Christie of Oregon to the Irish Capuchins to found a House and take charge of a parish in Roseburg is dated July 19th 1911. The original letter is in our Provincial Archives. A copy is given on page 6 of this account. 2. August 17, 1911. Fr. Thomas Dowling of Kilkenny, Provincial, to whom the above invitation was addressed, wrote from Dublin on August 17th 1911 acknowledging receipt of the Archbishop's letter. " I have placed the matter before my Definitory, and we agree to accept your kind offer, subject to the necessary approval of our Superiors General in Rome, and subject to a satisfactory conclusion of final arrangements."
