FRANCISCAN CAPUCHIN PRIARY, CHURCH STREET, DUBLIN. Thursday, November 20th 1924. Dear Father Bernard. Your kind letter to hand, and I hasten to reply :- First, as you know I am most anxious that your Schools should receive mext year at any cost. Hence your plans met with a very favourable reception as far as my Approval can go. In fact if I were on the spot I would do anything short of stealing to keep them open. However you have done what was best under the circumstances, but it must be temporary. Go ahead with your project, and with God's help success will crown your efforts to train the children of Roseburg. Of course the Franciscan Sisters are best under the circumstances if you can get them, but if not, take the Holy Name. As I told you, the Archbishop asked me to get Sisters to take the Hospital and School, and said he could give the Hospital over to them provided they take the debt. I left him under the impression that I would try, but you know that Irish Sisters would not undertake a pro- position of that kind and negotiate it with the prospect of failure. The offer should come from the Archbishop himself, and even then, they might not agree to terms, etc. However if you could coax the Pendleton Nuns to entertain the project, you can remind the Archbishop of what he promised me, but as it is not in writing, he can easily go back of it, if it suits him to do so. He may be anxious to get the Sisters there free for elsewhere. Would not Keller build that House forethe Nuns, and we would offiliate himself and his wife to the Order, etc.? You will see by enclosed copies of Documents how the found- ation and Parish stands, and you can get a copy of "Douglas Map" there, and if you send us one for the Archives of the Province, I will be thankful, as we have not got one here. The other suggestion re Mass for Mendocino we may consider later on. Thanks for the good thought. I have not been able to call and see your dear good Father yet, but I hope to do so soon and bring him your love. We are all well, and they tell me that I have got ten years younger while away in Western America, and I feel it. Best wishes for Christmas to you all three. Fraternally yours, Yes Father O.S. & C.
