Friday, October 24th 1924. To His Eminence William Cardinal O'Connell, Archbishop of Boston. U.S.A. May it please your Eminence, At the instance of His Grace the Archbishop of San Francisco, who kindly promised to speak to Your Eminence for us at your meeting in Washington, D.C., I am writing to humbly ask the favour of a foundation for our Irish Capuchin Order in Your Grace's Archdiocese, where we may be of service to your priests and people, and where we might hope to find some youths of Irish parentage fit and willing to make the sacrifice necessary to join our Order, and labour in our growing Missionary work, especially in the Western States, where the need is greater, and the Catholic population fewer than in the East. Although our Irish Capuchin Missions to the States only date from 1910, when we started in Oregon, we have some thirty priests and Brothers from our home Province already doing parochial pioneer and mission work there, to the satisfaction of the Archbishops and Bishops in whose Dioceses we are placed. To make our work, at such a distance, a permanent success we look to and seek vocations in America itself, and for that purpose we have recently started a Seraphic College, with the approbation of Archbishop Hanna, away in Mendocino City on the banks of the Pacific Ocean, but for Vocations we would naturally look to where the descendants of our Irish Race are to be found with the Faith that is strong. If Your Eminence can see your way to help us by giving us a place in your Archdiocese, our Irish Province, here and in America, shall be ever grateful and thankful.
