Most Reverend and dear Father Procurator, In a letter to Your Paternity on August 12, 1949, we applied for permission to raise a loan of forty thousand dollars, with a view to restoring our Friary at Santa Inez, California, as a house of studies. On the condition that this sum is forthcoming, His Grace the Archbishop of Los Angeles has promised to defray the remainder of the expenses incurred in the restoration of the Friary. In answer to that letter we had a communication from Fr. Cuthbert of Chicago dated September 3rd stating that Your Paternity wishes to know (I) the amount of debts the Irish Province and the American Custody have respectively; and also (2) will the house at S. Inez belong to the American Custody or does it own the house already. (I) In the first place with reference to the Irish Province I am glad to say that it is free of debt. With regard to the Custody the Fr. Custos Provincial supplied the following information: "We have three places in the States which fully and completely belong to our Custody: a) Wilmington, Delaware. On this monastery there is a debt of SEVEN thousand dollars.b) Flintridge Seminary and High School. There the debt is ten thousand dollars.c) St. Benedict's, McKenzie Bridge. There is no debt on this place. (2) He states also "that the Old Mission House (a) does not belong to the American Custody, and (b) that it will not belong to the American Custody in the forseeable future". Santa Inez was established as a novus demus Ordinis by Rescript of the S. Congregation of Religious, Prot. n. 5900/24 dated 21 Nov. 1924. At the same time the Irish Capuchins were given charge in perpetuum of the parish of St. Agnes (Santa Inez) by Rescript of the same Congregation, N. 5900/24, dated 21 September, 1924. (V. Analecta Ordinis, XII, pp. 14 and 15). The Father Custos adds: "I do not know much about the significance of Foundations other than that they secure us the protection of the Holy See, and I think this is sufficient for us to make use of the loan." Fr. Custos has not further clarified the condition of Santa Inez, and I regret I can throw no further light on the matter. At present a House of Studies is needed in the Custody, and on account of the monetary situation at present the Province cannot supply any financial aid. We should be grateful if Your Paternity can obtain permission for the loan desired by the Fr. Custos to enable him to complete the House for the students of the Custody.
