Dear Fr. Stephen : I acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 7th, which reached me on last Saturday, 13th inst. In it were two three enclosures, (I) renunciation of your active voice in the coming Chapter; (2) copy of letter which you sent to the Religious with reference to the voting for the Superiors of the Custody, and (3) cheque of £43 : 5/- , for which I am deeply grateful. We are all glad to learn that Fr. Thomas is progressing, and we hope, please God, that he will soon be restored to good health. As I already told you I forwarded the documents y about Burlingame, etc., to Rome. I received from the Curia the following acknowledgment, which was sent on May 14th : "Nuperrime ad Curiam generalem pariter advenit epistula Tua cum documentis allegatis de difficultatibus Religi- osorum cum Ordinario S. Francisci in California circa domum nostram in Burlingame; hucusque nobis nihil de ipsius recursu ad S. Sedem constat; si vero contigerit iura Ordinis strenue defendemus." I expect by the time you get this letter that we shall have a new government in the Province. I avail of this opportunity to thank you sincerely for your cordial cooperation with our wishes, and your successful direction and government of the Custody for the past three years.
