The Apostolic Brief Insula Sanctorum of His Holiness Pope Pius XII, by which Glenstal was erected into an Abbey. Ireland, the "Island of Saints" as she is commonly called—and rightly so—is renowned especially for the glory of her monastic life. In ancient times, the Abbots of monasteries there were created bishops, and nurtured the flock of the faithful; furthermore, monks—many of them saints—used to go abroad from the monasteries of Ireland to extend on every side of the frontiers of Christ's kingdom, bringing the light of the Gospel principally to those countries which were still shrouded in the dark night of error. In this matter, the family of St. Benedict acquired fame and renown as an incomparable foster-mother of virtue and of doctrine. However, in evil days, its religious houses under the rule of Abbots came to an end in that island. Now, in recent times the sons of St. Benedict from Belgium established a house in honour of Saints Joseph and Columba in Ireland, at the site known as Glenstal, from which in the course of its successful development, no small profit accrued to the Church and people of God. It seems fitting then to advance this house of Glenstal of the Order of St. Benedict to the honour of an Abbey, so that, in a country formerly famous for such monasteries, at last after many years, that which had perished, might be restored. Our beloved son then, Theodore Neve, Abbot-President of the Belgian Congregation, under the title of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, of the Order of St. Benedict, petitioned us that the Conventual Priory of Saints Joseph and Columba of Glenstal be raised to that dignity. In accordance with our own affection for the sons of St. Benedict, and on the recommendation of the Sacred Congregation of Religious, by our Apostolic authority, and in virtue of the present letter, we willingly erect the the Conventual Priory of Saints Joseph and Columba established in Glenstal, into an Abbey in perpetuity. Belonging as it does to the Belgian Congregation under the title of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the same Order, we grant it participation in all the rights and privileges granted to the Abbeys of the same religious Congregation, and we permit the Chapter of the Abbey now erected by us to elect the first Abbot. Contraris, etc., Given under the seal of the Fisherman, January 10, 1957. THE ABBATIAL BLESSING OF The Right Reverend Joseph Dowdall, O.S.B., by His Grace the Most Reverend Jeremiah Kinane, D.D., Archbishop of Cashel and Emily assisted by The Right Reverend Camillus Claffey, O.C.S.O., and The Right Reverend Godfrey Dayez, O.S.B., at St. Columba's Abbey, Glenstal, Co. Limerick, on Saturday, the twenty-ninth of June, Nineteen hundred and fifty-seven, The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.
