CARLO BIANCONI Born at Tregolo in Lombardy, September, 1786 Died at Longwood, Co. Tipperary, September, 1875 "No living man has worked more than he has for the benefit of Ireland" - Anthony Trollope. Some of these days Ireland may need another Bianconi. If our transport system, based as it is on petrol and coal, should break down for the vant of these fuels, leaving our towns and villages in semi-isolation, our people without any convenient means of travel and our merchants without any cheap way of sending their goods, we shall be back again in the state in which Bianconi found us when he arrived in Ireland at the beginning of the last century. We shall then look around for someone to create, as Bianconi did, a new system of transport adapted to our special needs and special resources and covering the whole country in its network. We shall be fortunate indeed if in that emergency we find a man with half of his vision, energy and talent. It was in the summer of 1802 that Carlo Bianconi first put foot on Irish soil. He was then 15 years old and had arrived in Dublin with three other Italian boys
