THE SUBURBAN HOME, WATTS, CALIFORNIA WATTS, (Los Angeles Postoffice), CALIF, FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1923 WATTS MADE HEADQUARTERS OF IRISH FRANCISCAN ORDER IN U.S.; MISSIONS TO BE HELD With the beginning of the year 1923 the city of Watts became the headquarters of the Irish Franciscan Order of the Catholic Church. To non-Catholics this statement probably does not mean much but when it is taken into consideration that this order is one of the important priesthoods of the Church it puts the matter in another light. It means that the priests of this Order will all be working under instruction from the Fathers located here. A nation-wide campaign of instruction will be conducted from this place eventually if the plans of those in charge of the movement materialize. This step is as important to the Catholic denomination and bears the same relation to them that the announcement that the officials of the California conference of the Methodist church were going to make Watts their headquarters, would mean to the members of the Methodist Episcopal church here. Father Joseph Fenelon has been appointed by His Lordship, Most Reverend Bishop Cantwell to have charge of the work. He will be assisted by Father Gabriel Harrington. Later on it is expected that other priests will be added as the work continues to grow. The Capuchin Order, of which Father Joseph is a member, differs from the Franciscan Order only in the custom of wearing a beard. Father Joseph is one of the religion whose bearded features suggests a Presbyterian clergyman, but for his dress, and who bears an actually remarkable resemblance to St. Francis of Assist. His robe is brown with a knitted girdle, a hood drawn back on the shoulders, and sandals on his feet. His congregation he addresses as "beloved bretheren," his sermons are illustrated from the lives of the saints, and he preaches simply, in a clear voice with a sharp, sibilant enunciation. The priests will institute missions throughout the diocese of Los Angeles which covers a large part of Southern California. These missions cover a period of two weeks, the first week being given over to women of the church and the second one to men. The mission is similar in nature to revival meetings in the protestant churches. During its time the Catholic church member is urged to lay aside secular things and think more particularly of spiritual things. It is a time of great spiritual blessings according to members of the church. In the words of Father Joseph the parish of Watts has been given into the charge of the Irish Franciscan Capuchins by His Lordship, Most Reverend Bishop Cantwell. For the past twelve months Father Joseph has been engaged in conducting missions in the archdiocese of San Francisco, together with Father Sylvester Mulligan.
