Re: Glenstal Church Dear Mr. Thompson, I enclose herewith for your information a copy of the Schedule of Quantities and Form of Tender in connection with the above. Since discussing the matter with you on Friday last, when a Schedule of Rates was agreed upon, I have decided instead to present Contractors with what is virtually a Bill of Quantities but stressing that the quantities are approximate only and will be adjusted as the work proceeds. I felt this would have the added advantages of allowing for keener pricing and presenting the Fathers with a tender figure before commencing the work and one which should not be varied to any great extent on completion of the Contract. I would mention that generally these quantities can be regarded as very nearly accurate, but have to be stated to be approximate as these documents have been produced since our recent meeting under circumstances of great urgency and in any event much will depend on final floor levels, and sundry detail drawings showing precise dimensions, etc., and also Mr. Garland's full details of reinforcement required throughout. I shall telephone you early tomorrow morning (Tuesday) when perhaps you could let me have the list of Contractors to whom the Bills are to be submitted. I would suggest, subject to your agreement, that completed tenders are to be lodged in your office not later than 12 noon, Monday, 21st May, 1951. I shall arrange to travel to Limerick that morning and perhaps if you were to arrange with Father Sub Prior that we open the tenders in his presence in Glenstal or in your office immediately after this time or after lunch, a decision regarding acceptance of a nominated Contractors Schedule of Prices on the spot and so finalise the matter This arrangement will allow the Contractor five days to prepare for entering on the site and thus ensure the first sod being cut on Saturday, 26th instant as hoped for by Father Athanascius.
