Dear Father Albot, I am grateful for your letter received this morning; and I note all you say about your programme for Bro. Eugene. I am afraid that I did not make my advice fully clear in my letter to you; but I certainly did so to H. Bernard when he introduced the subject in a phone call last Monday afternoon. He was just going back to Glensted and he said he would - with all one respect - say my advice before you. That he did not do so is clear from your letter today. When Eugene came here early in June, he said

(2) That you had sent him for advice. I took that as just one further proof of the confidence - entirely undeserved - that Glenstal has shown me for more than thirty years. I listened to Eugene for about three hours!! I asked him an occasional question; and at the end gave him some general advice. He gave me permission to speak fully to you about him - he has tremendous confidence in you, quite rightly - and I regret that I did not get the opportunity of doing so before this. I fear it will not be possible to meet you or the question now - there this long and, I hope, respectful letter. I thought it would be possi- ble to spend a few days or a week in Glenstal before I leave Ireland shortly; but now I am sure that I cannot do so. Nor will there be time - should you so wish - to see Eugene here. Anyway, it is only for me to give him advice; it is for you in your

And now to the point: I have had a reasonably wide experience in the matter; and I say definitely that I have never met a truly good man like Eugene so entirely lacking in all that we mean by the interior life. He has difficulties - really not moral ones - and he has nothing at all to fall back on except to try and persuade himself that he has not a myonastic or Benedictine or rational. Certainly it is quite true to say that at present he has lost all taste for the spiritual side of your life, which is surely its real essence and, indeed, its gustification.
