I suggested that he come again in the weeks - the two weeks - following Eastern I spoke to H. Bernard or the phone three weeks ago and asked him to arrange details of the visit. He said he would ring me, but says then he has not done so. And says Eastern I have been free to see Eugene. Now, I fear it will not be possible to see Eugene at all. I think I shall not be here until longer. And next week I shall be very busy. Of course, I did not drain Eugene with Bernard. Eugene was very candid with me. There is

no moral problem; and I feel quite sure he has a true Glorified Vocation. The true liberty is that he is com- pletely immersed in his secreterial work. He prays very little - all he does is the routine office. For the moment he has lost all interest in the spiritual life of the Abbey. If something is not done soon, you may easily lose a fine fellow and a true vocation. Soon? Well at the latest when next term ends. In the meantime, his work will keep him interested. What he needs, I think, is to get away to some truely spiritual atmosphere. — Benedictine preferably — when he will pray myself and take a good look into his soul.
